ある夏の日、ヨーヨーはタイの街並みを歩いていた。
仕事で長期の休暇を取らなければならなかった。そんな時に選んだのがタイである。なぜなら、昔からある程度の興味を持っていたいたのだ、テレビやラジオで彼の好きな芸人さんがよく訪れ、様々な美味しい料理やレジャーなど色々な楽しい経験を語っている「微笑みの国タイ」そんな場所に彼は少し憧れていたのだ。
5日目の夜、路地裏を歩いていると一件の古ぼけたバーが現れた。日本で過ごしている時は絶対にこんなところ訪れることはない。しかし、心の中で「今自分は海外にいる、何も知らない国、物は経験だ入ってみよう。」そう思い、あちらこちら禿げかけた木で作られた、今にも壊れそうな扉を開けた。
「ギッギーッ」と音をたて目の前に現れたのは、２、３人がカウンターで飲んでいるありふれたそれだった。日本のバーと何も変わらない、何も彼にとって特別ではなかったのである。
席に座り、瓶のビールを注文した彼はその日携帯で撮った写真を一人で眺めていた。そんな時である横から聞き馴染みのある日本語が聞こえてきた「君、ここは初めてかい？」少しギョッとした。確かにタイには観光客として訪れる日本人も多い、ただ何故こんな路地裏のバーに日本人がと彼はそれに驚いたのである。
「はい、初めてです。というよりもタイという国が初めてでして」とヨーヨーは答えた。彼は「そうなんだ。僕はタイはもうかなり長くてね、１ヶ月くらいかな？タイのアーティストの友達の家に住ませてもらってるんだ。」とその日本人の男は答えた。
「そうなんですね。ところでお名前は？」彼は続けて答えた「そういえば名乗ってなかったね、僕の名前は貴志、よろしくね。君の名前は？」「僕は北爪って言います。初めまして。」直後、ヨーヨーは相手は名前で名乗ったのに、こんなところでも苗字で名乗ってしまう自分を少し恥ずかしく感じてしまった。

On a summer day, Yoyo wandered through the streets of Thailand.
He had been forced to take an extended break from work, and Thailand was the destination he chose. It wasn’t entirely random—he had long held a quiet interest in the country. On TV and radio, comedians he admired often spoke of their trips there, sharing stories of incredible food, lively развлечения, and unforgettable experiences. “The Land of Smiles,” they called it. Somewhere along the way, Yoyo had begun to feel a subtle longing for that place.
On the fifth night of his trip, as he walked down a dimly lit alley, he came across an old, weathered bar.
Back in Japan, he would never have set foot in a place like this. But a thought crossed his mind: I’m in a foreign country now. I don’t know anything about this place… but that’s exactly why I should try.
The door, made of cracked and peeling wood, looked as though it might fall apart at any moment. Still, he pushed it open.
Giiiii… creak.
Inside, there were only two or three people quietly drinking at the counter.
It was, in every sense, an ordinary bar—no different from the ones back home in Japan. Nothing about it struck him as special.
He took a seat and ordered a bottle of beer. As he waited, he scrolled through the photos he had taken earlier that day on his phone, quietly reliving the moments alone.
Then, suddenly, he heard something from beside him.
Japanese.
“Is this your first time here?”
The voice startled him.
It wasn’t unusual to meet Japanese tourists in Thailand. But in a place like this—a hidden bar tucked away in a back alley—it felt strangely unexpected.
“Yes, it is,” Yoyo replied. “Actually… it’s my first time in Thailand.”
“I see,” the man said with a slight smile. “I’ve been here quite a while now. About a month, I guess. I’m staying at a Thai artist friend’s place.”
“I didn’t expect that,” Yoyo said. “By the way… what’s your name?”
The man chuckled softly. “Oh, I never introduced myself, did I? I’m Kishi. Nice to meet you. And you are?”
“I’m Kitazume. Nice to meet you.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, Yoyo felt a faint sense of embarrassment. The man had introduced himself casually, using only his first name—yet here he was, even in a foreign country, instinctively giving his family name instead.
